FIELD NOTES: A city built for shade

A warmer city changes the meaning of a short walk.

Shade is not an amenity. It is a route to school, a place to wait and a question of who gets to occupy public space in summer.

A route through the heat

At noon, the shortest path across a square can be the wrong one. A line of trees, a colonnade and a shaded bench can turn a necessary errand into a journey a person can actually make.

Shade is unevenly distributed. It follows investment, maintenance and the age of a street. Mapping it makes one kind of inequality visible, but only when the map is followed by places to sit and ways to keep the trees alive.
